Le "snack Achkar" vient d'ouvrir ses portes !

Il se trouve sur la route principale de Faraya, à Feytroun. Reconnaissable à ses couleurs rouge et blanche, il propose des manakiches, des pizzas, du poulet grillé, des sandwiches divers.

Après les épreuves de Habib à l'hôpital, c'est la joie dans la famille ! Les trois jeunes gens aidés de leurs amis s'activent à la décoration , alors que Chafica prépare le "saj" pour cuire ses manakiches.

C'est grâce aux amis et au soutien de la LBC, qui a reçu une aide financière en provenance ... d'Australie... que le paiement du loyer a pu être assuré !

Le snack Achkar a besoin de notre soutien pour bien démarrer.

Back home

Au bout de dix jours à l'hôpital, Habib se sent assez bien pour rentrer chez lui à Achkout.
Tout se passe bien. Il doit encore prendre des doses importantes de facteurs de coagulation pour prévenir toute hémorrhagie. Il marche normalement et sa jambe ne le fait plus souffrir.

Merci à la LBC, Arc-en-ciel et Nicolas qui ont couvert tous les frais de l'operation.

Habib's operation is scheduled for tomorrow 7 am.
He feels a little better: the pain is less acute today.

Habib à l'hôpital

Souffrant de douleurs intolérables, Habib a été transporté au service des urgences de l'Hôtel Dieu.
Des aides sont arrivées de Suède, du Liban... suite à l'émission diffusée à deux reprises.
Son opération pourra avoir lieu mardi ou mercredi.

Merci à la LBC qui a pris à cœur le cas de cette famille.

Il nous faudra poursuivre les contacts pour tenter d'obtenir des aides permanentes.

LBC émission

Ce vendredi 13 juin, à 15h, l'émission de la LBC " Nehna labaad" sera consacrée à Habib et Chafica. Le but est de faire appel au public et aux personnes de bonne volonté qui peuvent apporter leur contribution au financement de l'opération de son genou. La somme nécessaire est énorme : 100 000 dollars environ pour assurer les besoins en facteurs de coagulation nécessaires !
Nous espérons pouvoir réunir cette somme au plus vite. Il y a urgence .....

Rapport du Dr Khayat : chirurgie urgente

Habib el Achkar, né le 1er Janvier 1987, est un jeune homme atteint d’hémophilie A sévère. Il est suivi régulièrement au centre de l’Association Libanaise de l’Hémophilie.

Il présente actuellement un pseudo-anévrysme de l’artère poplitée au genou droit, de 8 x 7 x 4,5 cm, partiellement thrombosé avec toujours une lumière active communicante de près de 2 cm². Cet anévrysme semble s’être constitué en regard de clips osseux posés il y a quelques années pour chirurgie fémorale. Il doit être opéré le plus rapidement possible avec ablation des clips. La présence de cet anévrysme fait courir un risque vital de son membre inférieur droit, et donc cette chirurgie est urgente.

Dans le contexte de son hémophilie A, cette chirurgie ne peut se faire que sous couverture de facteur de coagulation. Les besoins pour pareille chirurgie seraient autour de 100.000 UI de facteur VIII. Au Liban, l’unité de facteur de coagulation coûte 1 à 1,2 $ US.

Habib a deux autres frères hémophiles en âge scolaire, et son père est décédé il y a plus de 2 ans. Il représente la seule ressource financière de sa famille, avec un salaire ne dépassant pas les 300 $ par mois.

Aucune assurance privée ne couvre les frais des facteurs de coagulation dans le pays. Habib n’est pas couvert médicalement par la Sécurité Sociale et le Ministère de la Santé délivre actuellement un maximum de 3000 UI par mois à chaque personne.

A la lueur de tous ces arguments, il est urgent d’aider ce jeune homme, soit en don de facteurs de coagulation, soit en don financier pour assurer sa chirurgie.

Aujourd'hui, une équipe de la chaine de télévision LBC est venue faire un reportage sur la famille Achkar pour l'émission "Nehna labaad".
Il a fallu obtenir l'accord des trois garçons qui d'abord ne voulaient pas témoigner.
Nous espérons ainsi lancer un appel pour couvrir les besoins de l'opération urgente de Habib.

Là, on a vraiment besoin de votre aide !

Habib, Antonios et Nassib sont trois frères atteints, tous les trois, d’hémophilie grave. Ils vivent au Liban et partagent l’état de détresse des hémophiles libanais. Dans ce pays, l’approvisionnement en facteurs de coagulation est très limité ou inexistant. Au plan théorique, cela représente annuellement 0,3 à 0,35 unités par habitant. En Suisse, resp. en Europe, nous disposons de dix fois plus par habitant, c’est-à-dire 3 à 5 unités. Cet état de détresse a déjà été mentionné plusieurs fois dans notre bulletin. La situation politique actuelle est de nouveau très tendue et les nombreuses améliorations apportées ont été complètement réduites à néant. En ce qui concerne Habib et ses frères, la situation s’est agravée dans la mesure où leur père est mort en 2006 et leur mère n’a pu trouver qu’un travail à temps partiel. Elle ne dispose pas de l’argent nécessaire à la scolarité d’Antonios et de Nassib, à savoir, pour chacun, de 1500 dollars par an.

Ceci n’est pas un cas isolé; nous apprenons fréquemment de telles nouvelles. Les parrainages individuels ne sont pas sans poser des problèmes. L’A. S. H. est jumelée avec l’Association Libanaise des Hémophiles depuis 2002 et n’entend par conséquent pas soutenir les familles individuellement. Nous connaissons personnellement les responsables au Liban et nous avons confiance dans l’organisation locale dont la Présidente est Solange Sakr. Nous savons que cette dernière et son équipe prennent sur place les décisions qui conviennent et répartissent les dons de manière juste et judicieuse.

Demande d'aide internationale

Suite à la suggestion de l'Association Suisse des Hémophiles, voici la lettre envoyée ce matin à l'Association Mondiale des Hémophiles :

Je me permets de vous informer du cas tragique de trois frères libanais hémophiles: il s'agit de Habib (22 ans), Antonio (16 ans) et Nassib Achkar (14 ans). Leur mère Chafica est veuve, la seule actuellement salariée et ses revenus sont très réduits (femme de ménage). En raison de la situation actuelle au Liban , il y a un manque urgent de facteurs de coagulation.

Les besoins courants des trois frères sont couverts habituellement par l'Association Libanaise des Hemophiles, présidée par Mme Solange Sakr. Or le fils ainé Habib a urgemment besoin de 130 unités de Haemate P 500 en prévision de son opération du genou (la seconde !) , qui présente un oedeme très douloureux. Il est actuellement immobilisé et donc sans travail.

La mère est très déprimée et ne voit plus comment s'en sortir. Le dernier Nassib, commence à présenter les mêmes problèmes articulaires que ses frères. Antonio a déjà été opéré fin 2007 d'une synoviorthèse.

Le besoin est urgent de trouver les produits nécessaires à l'operation. Nous recherchons aussi un parrainage pour aider partiellement cette famille très démunie. L' Association Suisse des Hémophiles fournit une certaine quantité à l'Association libanaise, mais celle-ci devient vite débordée par les besoins qui sont énormes. Est-il possible de prévoir un envoi d'urgence pour ce garçon et ainsi compléter la quantité requise pour son opération ?

Back from the hospital

Habib's plans are in danger: his right knee is seriously damaged by severe internal bleeding, and following an operation he had a few years ago. He must undergo another operation, but he previously needs 150 units of coagulation factor Haemate P 500. With the latest events in Lebanon and the closure of the airport for nine days, no more of these factors are available ! The Lebanese Association for Hemophilia is overwhelmed by urgent needs, they could provide him with only 20 units .... until the air traffic comes back to normal to receive new stocks of this product.
Chafica is really depressed today: Habib does not sleep at night, the knee is painful and he should stay in bed all day. No more work, no projects, nothing.... He sold his cellular phone in order to get Internet connection installed at home and enjoy some entertainment. This will also encourage his brothers to stay more often at home..........
Can we find a way to help this family on a permanent basis ?
Is it possible to find sponsors who would take in charge part of the enormous problems arising more and more often ??

New problems for Habib

While Habib is working hard to get his new snack open, the latest events in Lebanon have stopped his efforts... He is suffering again from his joints and a swallowing knee. At the hospital, the doctor asked for an IRM. Fortunately, the Lebanese Association for Hemophilia paid the bill.

Our friend M.H. sent us again her contribution to the family. This will help us pay for the snack equipment. Indeed, Lebanon is the land of miracles !

Starting the project

A good sign came from Dubai: our friend Mae has just sent some money to help the Achkar family.
So we decided to pay Habib a down payment of 1000 dollars, to help him pay the rent of the snack he wants to open in Rayfoun !
Indeed, we were inspired by the Chinese saying : "Instead of giving a man a fish, teach him how to fish "....

A new project under study

Habib is preparing the Almond flowers for the Zouk Mikael Food festival which was held last sunday.

While admiring these delicate shapes, we discussed their new project: opening a snack in the main street of Rayfoun, one of the most popular summer village in the Kesrouan mountain.

The place is very well known and situated, in the centre of the small town. It is fully equipped and furnished. They only need to provide a TV screen and Internet connection. Habib will make the sandwiches, crepes, etc... and Chafica the sweets. They will be helped by a friend and the two brothers, in the afternoon. A budget of 2.500 dollars is needed to pay the rent and the equipment.
With our friends Najwa and Mona, we decided to organize a fund-raising lunch next month.
Our friend Tony agrees to receive us in his restaurant Abou Tony in Kfour. Our trekking group Liban à Petits Pas will be more than happy to join and help us.

Preparing Easter

Habib concentrates on the preparation of the traditional maamouls for Easter, although he had just broken his left finger while reparing his car.

Nassib is also helping his mother packaging the Maamouls ...

Chafica has just recovered from a slight stroke. She spent one day in the hospital.

She is now back to work, and many orders are still arriving !

The youngest of the family, Nassib manages very well his disease. Unlike his brothers, his joints are not yet affected, but the threat is still present, because these problems often occur on the long run... Can you see hope in his eyes ??

Searching for help

The eldest , Habib , is the most seriously affected : his leg has shortened after an operation of the right knee. He still continues his work with the pharmaceutical company. He also helps his mother with the confection of lebanese sweets . His dream: being able to open a pastry shop with his mother...

Awaiting the operation

Antonio's right leg could be paralysed if not operated urgently. A few days before Christmas, he woke up in the middle of the night with a huge pain. Chafica left her job in a hurry to take him to the hospital. He needed a quick injection before being able to recover. After that, he insisted to accompany his schoolmates for a visit to a nearby orphanage, for the distribution of Christmas gifts to the children !.............

Here are the three brothers:

left: Habib the eldest, is the most seriously affected by his disease, as his right leg has shortened ten years ago after an operation of the knee due to a musculo-squelettal problem. Though he remains active and tries to work as a pastry cook, he could not keep his job when the employers learned about his disease ! Ignorance and false ideas about hemophilia prevent him being admitted as a normal employee in any company. His actual employer is the owner of a pharmaceutical company providing him and his brothers with the coagulation factors.

Middle: Antonio, actually suffering from the right knee, is awaiting his operation............ Any delay could end in destruction of the joint and other joint complications.

Right: the youngest, Nassib, is managing very well his disease, and does not present any musculo-squelettal problem yet.

Operation postponed

Antonio is feeling better after one injection of Factor VIII. His operation will be postponed until the Ministry of Health agrees to take it in charge. Contacts continue between the Association Libanaise des Hémophiles, his doctor Dr Khayat and the authorities.
Good news: a swiss family , the Bavaud from Fribourg sent 550 dollars to help Chafica pay some of the necessary medicines for the operation. Also, the Swiss Association has launched an appeal for the fostering of the three boys. Let's hope that people will react favorably . This will help their mother Chafica to better carry her burden.
Meanwhile, she has prepared cookies (marsaban) and bûches for Christmas . They are excellent and we ordered some for our family. Apart from her job in the village school, she also started working in a nearby restaurant to increase her salary. She is tired but always positive and never depressed !
